Meet the pastor

My name is Ed van Wijk, I’m a sinner and I am the pastor of DeMotte United Methodist Church. Paul in his letter to the Romans says it loud and clear, “…all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) And then he goes on to proclaim, “they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 3:24) Now that is Good News! Good News that I am called to proclaim at DeMotte UMC and to the people of the communities surrounding our church. I am excited about that and I hope that if you don’t have a church home yet, you will come and hear that Good News every Sunday morning  at 9 a.m. CT.

Here is some more of my background:

I was born in Eindhoven and raised in Dordrecht in The Netherlands. so I am 100% Dutch. That being said, having lived in NW Indiana for 27+ years I have become somewhat ‘Americanized.’

In The Netherlands I was a member of the Christian Reformed church and was very involved in the life of the church from an early age on.

After finishing High School, I studied in Amsterdam to become a Merchant Marine Radio-Officer. In 1976 I started my career in the Dutch Merchant Marine, traveling all over the world on board ships for about 17 years.

In the late 1980s I came to the U.S.A. In 1990 I went back to school pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Systems Analysis and Design at Purdue University. Once I received my Associate Degree I started working as a computer programmer and upon graduating with my Bachelors Degree I began a career as a practice manager leading the implementation of human resource management software.

Initially I lived in Crown Point. In 1990 I moved to Lowell and joined the First United Methodist Church there. In 2002 I quit my career as a computer consultant and joined the staff at Lowell First UMC as a Director of Ministry for Education and Worship; and enrolled at Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary, graduating in 2007 with a Master of Divinity degree.

From 2007 to the end of June 2016 I have served Kentland Trinity UMC as their lead pastor. On July 1, 2016 I became the pastor of DeMotte UMC.
